The 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine, however, is beginning to show signs of antiquation. Slightly clattery at idle and a touch harsh at high revs, it’s far from the best economy diesel of its kind.
The 1.4 TSI is surprisingly strong, pulling car and caravan from 30-60mph in just 13 seconds. The Spaceback also coped well enough with the hill start so long as the handbrake was pulled on firmly, and also proved reasonably stable in a straight line unless a strong crosswind was blowing. However, it was wrong-footed by the lane-change test.

The more powerful 1.2 TSI gets a six-speed gearbox, so it’s quieter and more relaxed at speed. If you are covering lots of miles the TDI diesels make sense. Sadly they’re not very refined and are pretty noisy.
The 1.4-litre TDI has 90hp and is available with either five-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG automatic. Regardless of transmission choice, it’s the slowest engine in the Spaceback’s range: 0-62mph in 11.6 seconds for the manual or 11.7 seconds for the automatic. The larger 1.6-litre TDI engine has 116hp, and will be the better 45Ab4Ot.
